Jim knew if he wanted to buy abalone soon he had better do it before either all the abalone were fished out of their local bays or his meager inheritance ran out and he was left broke once again. When his mother passed away he made himself a promise that he would one day go down to the docks with one thousand dollars in cash and buy abalone for the whole family, with the intention of throwing a mid-summer barbeque blowout to live it up in the name of his beloved mom.

Little did he know that circumstances would conspire to make his plan to buy abalone nearly impossible. Local fishermen and a group of (previously) recreational divers had recently been discovered poaching huge numbers of prime abalone in federally protected waters, and there had now been a ban placed on all abalone harvesting in the area until further notice by the feds. Sport divers couldn't even haul in their three legally-sized abalone per day limit because apparently the highly sophisticated poaching ring had been operating in the area for so long unabatedly that eight inch matured abalone that people were allowed to catch could now only be found at depths of up to thirty to forty feet. This damaged even the local black market and had the effect of making it easier to buy cocaine in his town that it was to buy abalone.
