It meant a lot to him that the kids would bring him abalone shell, even if it meant that a certain drawer, and later on, a certain closet, began to fill up with abalone shell specimen from all corners of the island. Only the Jenkins twins abstained. Their family had banned them from shell hunting and going to the beach alone ever since they went missing one evening, only to be discovered giggling with glee in the moonlight, busily adding to a growing six foot pile of beach debris, shells, seaweed, and driftwood.
Being a teacher on the island did have other fringe benefits besides receiving all the free abalone shell he could carry at times. He got to develop a unique relationship with the kids that would not have been possible in a school on the mainland. The gifts of abalone shell were the children's way of saying that they appreciated the way he treated them. They responded to his teaching style by making gifts of abalone shell, and he responded in turn by doing the best he possibly could for them.
