Abalone jewelry had run his life and ruined his life. In high school he fell in love with a girl who only would go out with him if he showered her with gifts. Of course, not understanding the evil motivations of a self-centered teenage girl in love with her own reflection and fantasizing R&B video images of some imagined future reality, he gave in. Her favorite was abalone jewelry, so he became an expert overnight, and during some lean times was in the shop class workshop far into the evening hours constructing new pieces for her that he would later claim to have bought at some exclusive seaside souvenir boutique.
He would never see her again of course, after senior year. She sold all the abalone jewelry he had ever given her and bought a BMW, which she used to drive to Los Angeles the day after graduation, where she met up with the lead singer of "Sexcanalous", whom she had been messing around with since getting backstage at their concert junior year. She graduated from abalone jewelry to gold, diamonds, and mink coats, but she was still the same really. He soon realized the folly of it all, but didn't really care because he became successful at a young age, opening his own exclusive beachside jewelry boutique, specializing in abalone jewelry.
