Life on the abalone farm had been good for Billy. Plenty of sunshine and exercise, all the abalone he could eat, what else could a free spirit with a love for marine life ask for? There were times when this way of thinking would wear thin for him though, and he would start to wonder what life might be like if he were to leave the abalone farm and set out on a new adventure to explore the outside world.
Sure, he would miss the people he had come to know while living on the abalone farm, aunt Betsy, little Dave, Mo, and Chelsie, but they all knew he couldn't stay there forever. He had shown up looking so young and nervous, they all knew right away they wanted to take him on and put him to work. Once he got into the swing of things, the workloads kind of lowered a bit for everyone, and Billy began to enjoy getting up at the crack of dawn and slipping on his waders and wool sweater. They took to having a cup of coffee before starting the shift, watching the sun start to crack across the horizon behind the abalone farm. Those mornings more than anything were what kept Billy from having any thoughts of leaving for a long time.
