As we approached the end of the cavern, lumpy abalone lined the floor, causing many people to trip and fall in to the water again, and then to shriek as their hands found the thick slimy rim of flesh under the shell of the abalone as they were struggling to grab ahold of something to pull them back up again.

They would soon get to know the abalone much more intimately as it would come to be discovered that it was practically the only food source available anywhere nearby. This actually meant that it at least it wasn't the worst place in the world to shipwreck, but after the first week of eating a diet of nearly purely abalone sushi and sea urchin roe, most of the survivors were ready to start either hunting shark or octopus just for a change of pace.
